ILLAWARRA COMMUTERS URGED TO WEAR FACE MASKS WHEN TRAVELLING ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The Labor Opposition is today calling for local commuters to wear face masks when they are travelling on public transport.

Social distancing is not always possible on buses and trains. To minimise any confusion Shadow Minister for Health Ryan Park is saying commuters should wear masks or face coverings when they are on crowded transport.

Labor wrote to the Transport Minister 40 days ago about this matter – but there’s been no reply and no action.

It’s the clear advice of the World Health Organisation - every other major economy in the world except Australia requires or recommends masks.

“NSW is staring at a second wave and the time has come to end the confusion on masks” Mr Park said.

“The Transport Minister has himself said that socially distancing on public transport is not always possible.

“Our commuters are often on trains for more than an hour and a half. That is a long time in a confined space” he said.

Mr Park also said wearing face masks been found to reduce COVID-19 transmission by up to 60%.
