This week I have written to Kellogg’s asking them to engage in initial discussions about the Illawarra putting forward a bid to host one of these iconic events on one of our spectacular stretches of beach as we have successfully done in the past.

It’s been nearly 16 years when we last hosted an event when the series was then under the sponsorship of Uncle Toby’s but I believe we are more than capable of hosting another of these events and showcasing our region to TV audiences across the country.

This region has been a terrific breeding ground for past and current champions such as Ali Day, Wes Berg, Darren and Dean Mercer, Jonathon Crowe, Phil Clayton, Hannah Minogue and Hayden White and no doubt these individuals would love to come and be a part of an event that took place in the area where they grew up and honed their surf skills.

I have had some very preliminary discussions with representatives from Destination Wollongong, Council and Surf Lifesaving Illawarra all of whom are supportive of entering into discussions to see how we can make this a reality.

We have the beaches, the climate, the infrastructure and the facilities as well as experienced people who have hosted major sporting events to ensure this would be a success for our area.
