With the school year still young, Member for Keira Ryan Park is imploring local teenagers to take advantage of a free meningococcal vaccine being offered by the NSW Government for Years 11 and 12 students.
Mr Park, a strong supporter of vaccines, is calling on all Year 11 and 12 students to make the most of the vaccine being offered by the Government, as those in their late-teen years have been identified as the most at risk group.
The announcement of the program comes after the lobby group Meningococcal Australia pressured all states and territories to provide the service, initially offered by the Government of Western Australia.
Mr Park, the Shadow Minister for the Illawarra, says all people are vulnerable to the disease, but the 180,000 Year 11 and 12 students being offered the vaccine should follow through with being vaccinated.
Quotes attributable to Shadow Minister for Illawarra Ryan Park:
“Meningococcal can kill within hours. It is a serious disease, and as such, I am imploring all Years 11 and 12 students to get vaccinated.
“Get vaccinated to protect yourself, your friends and your family – don’t risk it.
“I encourage parents and caregivers to ensure that their children are vaccinated.
“I tip my hat to the work of Meningococcal Australia, who are fighting the good fight and ensuring that Governments of all persuasions are offering vaccines, like the one announced by the NSW Government today.
“As a former teacher, I understand how important it is for students to get vaccinated, as schools are often hot-beds for disease contraction.
