NSW Shadow Minister for Health Ryan Park today called on the Berejiklian Government to sit down with health workers across NSW and address their deep and justified concerns regarding the safety of patients, workers and members of the public at hospitals across NSW.
Years of government inaction and neglect have contributed to a safety crisis in emergency wards across NSW. In 2017-18, there were a total of 529 reported assaults in NSW hospitals, almost 40 assaults per month (Source: BOCSAR).
Hospital staff across NSW are frustrated and concerned for the safety of themselves, as well as that of their colleagues, patients and the general public, and are preparing to take industrial action.
NSW Labor is calling on the Liberals and Nationals to provide additional staff, particularly security staff, and for improved training programs to deal with difficult patients, particularly those under the influence of substances like ice.
Mr Park said: “Hospital staff are not punching bags. They are right to be angry with this Government. The safety health workers, patients and members of the public is crucial and the Liberals and Nationals are doing nothing to address the issue.
“Premier Berejiklian and Minister Hazzard need to sit down with health workers and come up with a solution. These are people who care for the sick day in, day out. They should have a right to feel safe while they’re doing their jobs.”
