Shadow Minister for the Illawarra Ryan Park and Labor Candidate for Wollongong have committed $5 million to undertake vital upgrades at Mt Keira Summit Park.
The dilapidated and underutilised summit park at Mt Keira will receive a much needed overhaul with the funding used to construct a new café/ restaurant and well as improvements to signage, walking tracks, aboriginal education initiatives and visitor information.
Funds will be allocated to Wollongong City Council who currently have responsibility for the site.
Destination Wollongong has been actively working for a long term solution to reviving Mt Keira as a tourist hub for the region.
Currently a tender process is underway at Mt Keira for a container café operator however this is only a temporary solution that will rely on enhancing the overall precinct if it is to be successful.
Quotes attributable to Shadow Minister for Illawarra Ryan Park:
“I have long been advocating for these vital improvements to Mt Keira and am pleased to join with Paul Scully today to show Labor’s commitment to Mt Keira.
“What I want to see is Council using the expertise of Destination Wollongong to advise on how best to engage experienced tourism industry operators to establish a viable and sustainable tourism experience at Mt Keira.
“The container café is welcomed as temporary solution however more needs to be done. I want to make sure that all opportunities are explored and action is taken sooner rather than later. This has already dragged on for too long and we need to be proactive in reviving this site as a world class tourist destination.
“It really is a no-brainer, a thriving tourism sector will have significant economic benefits for our region.
