Shadow Minister for the Illawarra Ryan Park has said that given the Australian Stock Exchange by BlueScope Steel released earlier today, the NSW Government must stop dodging questions and outline what assistance they are going to give not only BlueScope but our region.
“We want to know how the Premier is going to help ensure a sustainable steel industry is maintained here in the Illawarra. To date the Premier has given very non-committal statements but no real solutions” Mr Park said.
“What is clear is that BlueScope Steel needs the Government to provide some assistance. There are hundreds if not thousands of jobs on the line here and the Government needs to act.
“Our region is hurtling towards a crisis and the Government is doing nothing to help” he said.
Mr Park said he and his fellow Illawarra Labor colleagues had briefings arranged for this week while in Parliament to discuss a plan for the regions steel industry.
“I want to see the Government provide a commitment to ensuring 50% Australian Steel in all government projects. I want to see the Government giving priority to projects here in the Illawarra to ensure we have a strong local economy and supporting new jobs” he said.
