Shadow Minister for the Illawarra Ryan Park MP has welcomed the announcement that a Labor government will invest $32.5 million in 3,000 Landcare, Bushcare and Rivercare groups across the length and breadth of NSW, including the Illawarra.

Mr Park says Illawarra Landcare will directly benefit from the investment with local part time positions gaining permanency into the future.

Labor’s commitment will double current funding and enable Landcare to deploy more front line and regional co-ordinators to assist volunteer groups with on ground works, resourcing, strategy and securing other partnerships.

Landcare NSW also acts as an umbrella group for a range of volunteer groups including Rivercare and Dunecare. It takes a community-based approach to managing and protecting natural resources –conserving our environment, creating more productive and sustainable farms, and helping build more cohesive and resilient communities.

A recent report commissioned by Landcare NSW suggested the value of their work across the state was worth conservatively $500 million per annum.

Quotes attributable to Mr Park:

“The volunteers that make up Landcare NSW do a fantastic job in caring for our environment here in the Illawarra and across NSW, but they need the ongoing support of Government. That’s why I’m delighted about this announcement,” Mr Park said,

“This investment will not only deliver environmental benefits, it will ensure the Landcare Illawarra Coordinator role will be secure for years to come.”

“Funding will also contribute towards the professional development of coordinators across NSW and the improvement of corporate governance for board members.”
