Member for Keira has slammed a proposal from the NSW National Party that would slash day light saving hours by a month as a reckless attack on small businesses and local residents.

Small businesses, especially those in the hospitality industry could expect to see a reduction in trade considering the Nationals have passed a motion to reduce day light saving hours today in Parliament.

Tourism in NSW relies on the additional hours of daylight to maximise seasonal trading and we should be doing everything to encourage this economy not look to reducing it.

In the Illawarra a large portion of residents commute to Sydney and being able to come home and still have some daylight hours offers great opportunity to improve work life balance and overall wellbeing.

Quotes attributable to Shadow Treasurer Ryan Park:

“This proposal by the Nationals is simply short-sightedness. They have failed to consider the economic benefits and flow on employment that thrives during day light savings.

“The additional hours sees an increase in opportunity for people to be active and engaged in their communities.

“We need to be supporting small businesses, not looking to introduce changes that will potentially reduce their income.

“The vast majority of employees enjoy being able to get home from work and still have some daylight to enjoy with their families. This flies in the face of encouraging a work life balance.

“Gareth Ward needs to stand up for the Illawarra and condemn this ludicrous proposal from his coalition colleagues.’
