Nyree Saxby is a local women who is a dedicated and loving mother to two beautiful children. In 2012 her world was shattered when her then three year old daughter, Chloe, was diagnosed with Vanishing White Matter Disease (VWM), a very rare disease.

Nyree has dedicated the last four years to raising awareness of this insidious disease and has started a charity 'Saving Chloe Saxby' which is raising funds for greater research into VWM. To date she has been able to raise close to half a million dollars. Nyree knows that she is racing against the clock as most sufferers only live 5 to 10 years after diagnosis.

An unrelenting advocate, Nyree has dedicated her time to ensuring greater funding for research and has given all ofher spare time, when she is not caring for Chloe, to fighting this disease. She is a well deserving recipient of this award.

“I can simply think of no more deserving winner than Nyree. I met her a few years ago as a mother who was faced with an impossible prospect of losing her daughter. Since then she has managed to raise not only vital funds but also awareness for a disease only effecting 7 people in Australia.

“She is a vocal advocate for greater funding and is racing against the clock to save her daughter’s and other children’s lives who are suffering from VWM. Her strength of character, determination and ability to achieve much needed funds for this vital cause led me to nominate her for this award.

“Nyree proves that one person really can make a difference. As a community we are very lucky to have dedicated advocates such as her. I commend her on her efforts and am pleased to announce her as the Keira Woman of the Year.
