Shadow Minister for the Illawarra Ryan Park has today written to the NSW Government requesting that the Illawarra be put on the regional tour that newlyweds Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle will make when they visit Sydney later in the year.

The Government has today announced that they are proposing an itinerary that will include a visit to regional NSW and given the success the Illawarra has had in hosting major events including royal visits in the past there is no reason why we shouldn’t be on the list of places for Harry and Meghan to come and enjoy.

Royal visits are nothing new to the Illawarra with the Queen visiting in 1954. Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana opening our Performing Arts Centre and of course in recent times Prince Andrew.

Whilst Mr Park admitted he is a staunch supporter of an Australian Republic, that issue wasn’t going to be solved between now and October and such a visit would showcase our region to the world given the widespread interest in the Royals.

Quotes from NSW Shadow Minister for the Illawarra

The Illawarra has everything that Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle could ever wish for on a working holiday. Beautiful beaches, terrific bushwalking, great places to eat and of course the most welcoming and friendly people in Australia.

Given the NSW Government has proposed other regional areas including the Hunter, Blue Mountains and Bathurst, I want to make sure the Government looks at considering the Illawarra to be on the list of places the newlyweds considering visit as part of their first overseas tour.

The Illawarra has hosted so many major events in the last five years and in the past we have welcomed members of the British Royal Family to our shores and every time it has been a success!
