NSW Shadow Minister for the Illawarra and South Coast, Ryan Park, has welcomed the announcement that finally the NSW Government will take action to cull the deer population. Mr Park has long advocated for culling to address the increasing crisis of the growing wild deer population in the Illawarra.

Most recently there have been deer spotted at North Wollongong beach and along Memorial Drive in Fairy Meadow. At the time Mr Park said he was very concerned that it was only a matter of time before these large animals cause a significant accident on our motorways resulting in personal injury.

Deer populations have been allowed to grow to plague like proportions in the Illawarra while culling programs were suspended by the Berejiklian Government from December 2017 to June 2018.

It has been reported that the Government have finally agreed to a culling program and will gazette a new regulation that would ease shooting restrictions on the animals. Mr Park said the Illawarra needed to be named as a priority location by the Government.

Quotes attributable to Member for Keira, Ryan Park:

“To see that these feral deer on Memorial Drive and local beaches, is very concerning. We all know that the issue of wild deer is out of control and I have long said I would welcome bipartisan action to provide an immediate solution.

“I welcome this announcement and am hoping the Government will list the Illawarra as a priority location for the culling. They need to be focusing on addressing this crisis.

“People in my electorate have suffered these animals in the front yards destroying their property and roaming the streets in large numbers. This culling can’t come soon enough.
